The Basics

The HuronTel Home Features
What are Fibre Optics?
Fiber optics are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. They are arranged in bundles called fibre optic cables and use light instead of electricity to carry a signal. The light signals represent data, which is capable of traveling at the speed of light.

Interesting Fact: One bundle of fibre cable not much thicker than a pencil can carry ALL of the world's current communications traffic.

How do Fibre Optics work?
To understand how fibre optic cable works, imagine yourself looking through a very long flexible plastic pipe several miles long, with the inside surface of the pipe coated with a perfect mirror. Several miles away at the other end, a friend turns on a flashlight and shines it into the pipe. Because the interior of the pipe is a perfect mirror, the flashlight’s beam will reflect off the sides of the pipe (even though the pipe may curve and twist) you will see it at the other end. If your friend were to turn the flashlight on and off in a Morse Code fashion, your friend could communicate with you through the pipe. This is the essence of a fiber optic cable.

What is HuronTel Fibre to the Home or Fibre to the Curb?
Involves the installation of fibre optic cabling to or near your home or business.
This fibre optic cable will facilitate a plethora of new services delivered directly to your door.

These services include:
• 100% Digital HD Television including Personal Video Recording, Time Shifting and more!
• High Speed Internet delivered at Lightning Fast Speeds.
• Crystal Clear Home Phone with Battery Backup during Power Outage.

Stages of Construction

Stage One - Fibre Construction
The first stage of construction is to bury conduit underground along the roadways. Locate flags are one of the first signs that we are on our way.

Underground is preferable over aerial installations to keep the look of your community clean and to make the cable less susceptible to damage. Fibre will eventually be pulled through this conduit.

A process called "directional boring" is used. A machine efficiently places the conduit under driveways and roads creating very little disruption of the ground. Many times you cannot even tell that it has gone through your property.

A vault or terminal that houses connection points are installed on municipal property at specific points along the fibre route. Please refer to the maps below to see where construction has been completed and where construction is ongoing.

Stage Two – Construction to your Home or Business
The next stage, taking conduit to each home and business, will begin shortly after the main line construction is completed in your area. If you have not submitted a "Permission to Dig" form, you will be contacted to ensure you don't miss out on this opportunity. If you have not been contacted and you would like to submit one, you can download one and either fax or email to the contact on the form.

Once we have your approval, a representative will contact you to discuss placement of the conduit on your property and any underground water or electrical features you may have.

During this stage, a 3/4" conduit pipe will be installed up to your home or business in the best possible place for easy access to the inside utility area; usually where your hydro and other services enter the building.

Stage Three - Work Inside Your Home or Business
Whenever possible we would prefer to access your home or business only once. Coordination with our office staff will be required to book the installation of the ONT, battery back-up unit as well as any services you may want.

The ONT and UPS (power supply with battery backup) are usually installed in your utility room. Because fibre optics cannot conduct electricity, you need a battery back-up to keep the network connection running when the electricity goes out. For this reason, an electrical outlet will need to be available in this area.

UPS (Power supply with battery backup)

Installation of the ONT and battery as well as connection of the fibre, will take approximately two hours.

Why is this important to me?
Fibre technology is unique because it can carry massive amounts of information, called bandwidth, over long distances without degradation. Copper can also carry high bandwidth, but only for a few hundred yards; after which the signal begins to degrade and bandwidth narrows. Connected homes and businesses receive a wider range of products and services. You can be sure the leap into the next-generation broadband will inspire further innovations that we cannot even imagine!

What are the benefits of having this service at my house or business?
1) Greater Capacity: Today's homeowners are using technologies that require more and more bandwidth, and fibre optics are the only medium that can keep up with the bandwidth demand.
2) Cost-Effective: Data can travel many miles in a split-second. This speed allows a more cost-effective method to transmit large amounts of data to everyone's homes. Several miles of fibre optic cable can be made cheaper than equivalent lengths of copper wire.
3) Future-Proofing: Once installed, fibre is usually upgraded by changing the electronics that creates the light pulses, and not by replacing the cable itself. That's why fibre networks are said to be "future-proof."

Questions & Answers

Will getting fibre to the home destroy my yard?
We will make all efforts to minimize any disturbance of your property and all necessary restoration will be completed promptly. Those provided with service via Fibre to the Curb will see no disturbance.

Will installing fibre make my home more valuable?
A house is generally worth much more if it has access to a public street, water, and sewer services, public schools and other “utilities” than if it does not. Consider this question, “Why would you equip your home with 120-year-old technology that costs as much as (or more than) fiber, and will be totally obsolete in just a few years?”

Will fibre increase my rates?
No. Your service prices will not be affected if you choose to only have the new higher quality services.

What do I need to do to get the service to my home or business?
First, we will need your authorization by having you fill out a permission slip to allow us to install fiber optic cable to your home. We can provide you the permission slip by simply calling our office. We will then dispatch one of our technicians to your home where he will check for power and proper grounding, and install the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or Gateway device to the outside of your home.

What if I do not want to have fibre optics installed at this time?
The fibre optic cable will be laid to your lot line and buried in an underground vault at the curb for future use.

What is HuronTel Digital HD TV?
Using our state-of-the-art fibre optic network, HuronTel Digital HD TV is the cutting edge of entertainment and will transform the way you experience television. HuronTel Digital TV has an unparalleled channel lineup and the most robust Basic Digital TV package around, as well as exciting features such as a dual-tuner Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and Choose Your Channel capabilities. With HuronTel Digital HD TV, you'll be enjoying the very latest in digital technology from the comfort of your own home.

How does HuronTel Digital HD TV differ from Cable Service?
Traditional cable TV networks use mostly coaxial cable to deliver service to your home. HuronTel Digital HD TV is 100% fiber-optic technology straight to your living room. HuronTel's Fibre to the Home network provides unparalleled bandwidth allowing you the luxury of more channels and more high definition programming.

How does HuronTel Digital HD TV differ from Satellite Service?
Satellite providers require you to install a dish onto your home and require a clear line of sight in order to receive service. With HuronTel Fibre to the Home, all of your HuronTel services are delivered straight to your door via our fibre optic network. That means inclimate weather conditions will not effect your viewing habits. Plus, no need to pay for several different theme packages in order to get all the channels you want. HuronTel offers you the ability to Choose Your Channel, and a limited number of theme packages jam packed with all your favourite channels for one low monthly rate.

Can I still hook up my older TV set to Digital HD TV?
HuronTel uses your existing coax cable connection for our Digital HD TV service, making installation easy and unobtrusive.
